There Is No Need to Cling to the Past

Nothing in this world is immutable and changeless.

Take the body. When young, your face is like a white water lily tinged with red, so handsome and lovely.

Even if you are exquisitely beautiful, when you age and grow sallow, you too will be like a shriveled stump of rotten wood.

By then, even you will be repulsed when you see yourself.

You can only silently yearn for your long-lost youth, which will never return.

How many people are willing to admire an aged body?

We elderly people in our sixties find that young people recoil at the sight of us.

But one can foresee that in the not-so-distant future, their own handsome, tall, straight bodies will surely deteriorate like ours.

No matter where or when, there has never been an exceptional individual for whom birth, aging, illness, and death do not exist.

Even Chakravartin and Indra both displayed impermanence in the end. How could these frail, fleshly bodies of ours not wane and decay day by day?

Not only is the body impermanent, but there is nothing in the external world that is not similarly subject to change.

High mountains and flat plains, cities and villages, the vast Gobi Desert—locales of every form and color have parts that please the eye and mind and also parts that are dangerous and threatening.

But they will all ultimately be destroyed by impermanence and undergo complete transformation, just as the sea can be transformed into mulberry fields.

Since there is nothing in the external world or within ourselves that is constant and unchanging, what need is there to cling to what we now possess?

Although each person’s happiness and suffering is different, we have one thing in common:

our happiness and suffering are like a flash of lightning in the sky.

They are all impermanent.

Yet many people do not realize this.

They grasp at illusory and insubstantial things like the body, like wealth, and for the sake of these things they create all kinds of unwholesome karma.

It is only when they face death that they suddenly realize that despite everything they have striven for, they cannot take with them even a strand of hair.

Instead, it is only the wholesome and unwholesome karma they created in this life that will follow them—pursuing them like a shadow.
